An interesting discovery I made the other day while searching for something completely different... This film is fictional, but bears a little resemblance to certain events which took place during the late 1820's, in an era when the United States was tottering on the brink of civil war. Based on a novel by Samuel H. Adams.
Several interesting facets of this film include an insight on how great countries are run by humans; the decisions and actions which decide the fate of nations are influenced by seemingly insignificant people and things.
How jealousy, slander and gossip can destroy lives and, like tiny termites, wind up destroying an impregnable fortress, and altering the course of history.
Despite its depth, it's an enjoyable film; probably the only time I've ever appreciated Robert Taylor on screen. Lionel Barrymore, of course, steals the show every time, with his grouchy stubborn and lovable growls.
